The short answer
As a beginner you need an app that decides for you: what to train today, in what order, how heavy and for how long to rest. AGUNA does all of that and plans your meals too. Fitbod and Planfit are solid alternatives. Strong and Hevy are great logbooks, but they expect you to already have a plan.
Why beginners quit, and what fixes it
Most people do not quit because the workout was too hard. They quit because the gym floor is confusing. In an Ipsos survey for GoodLife and ParticipACTION, 40% of Canadians said working out at a gym is intimidating, and among them 33% said it is because they do not know what they are doing. A OnePoll survey in the US put the share of intimidated Americans at 50%.
Fitness apps lose people fast too: Adjust measured a median of 7% of health and fitness app users still active on day 30 in 2022. The apps that keep beginners are the ones that remove decisions, not add features.
What a beginner needs from the app
- A plan from your goal and your days, with rest days built in.
- An order: one or two muscle groups and a handful of exercises in sequence.
- The weight, suggested from what you did last time.
- A rest timer that tells you when to go again.
- A way out when the machine you need is taken.
- Food guidance if the goal is losing weight.

What your first week with AGUNA looks like
- Your week, from your goals. Pick what you want (lose weight, build muscle, grow your glutes, get stronger) and the days you can train. AGUNA lays out Monday to Sunday with rest days built in.
- An order for every session. Each workout trains two muscle groups, such as Chest and Shoulders, with six exercises in the order you do them, so you never stand there wondering what is next.
- The weight, suggested. It remembers every set you log and suggests the next weight from what you lifted last time, so progress tracks itself.
- Rest, timed. A rest timer runs between sets and calls you back when it is time.
- Machine taken? Busy gym? One tap when someone is on the machine you need moves a free exercise up. One tap on a packed day turns the whole session into dumbbell work.
- Edit anything. Swap an exercise, add a set, or change what each day trains.
- Meals planned, calories counted. A meal plan from 15 regional menus that covers every country, plus Snap a meal: photograph your plate and AGUNA counts it.
- Reminders and progress. Reminders to train and to eat, and a Trackers screen with your strength records going up.
Questions
What is the best personal trainer app for beginners?
One that makes every decision for you on day one: what to train, in what order, how heavy, how long to rest. AGUNA is built for exactly that and also plans your meals. Fitbod and Planfit are good alternatives; Strong and Hevy are better once you know your own routine.
What should a beginner look for in a workout app?
A plan built from your goal and schedule, a clear order of exercises, a suggested weight, a rest timer, an explanation of each movement, and a way out when a machine is taken. Food guidance helps if you want to lose weight.
How many days a week should a beginner train?
Two to four days is enough to start. AGUNA asks which days you can train and builds rest days around them.
Is it normal to feel intimidated at the gym?
Very. In an Ipsos poll of Canadians, 40% said they find the gym intimidating, and 33% of those said it is because they do not know what they are doing. A plan for the session takes away most of that.
Are free workout apps good enough for beginners?
Logging apps like Strong and Hevy are excellent and free to start, but they expect you to bring the plan. A beginner usually needs the plan more than the log.
Can I try AGUNA free?
Yes. Your first full workout is free, with no card.
