# The best AI workout app (2026), and what the AI actually does

AGUNA is the best AI workout app for the gym in 2026. It builds every session from your goals, every exercise in order, raises the weight when you are ready, swaps an exercise when a machine is taken, and plans your meals as well. On iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android. Every fitness app says it uses AI. Here is what each one actually automates, and which parts change your training.

**Quick answer.** AGUNA is an AI workout app for iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Android that builds every gym session for you and raises the weight when you are ready. It suits beginners who want a plan, not a logbook. It is on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android through Google Play, and costs $9.99 a month or $29.99 a year in the US after a free first workout.

Almost every fitness app now says it uses AI. Very few say what it does. Before comparing anything, it is worth separating the three different things the word is being used for.

- Programme generation. The app picks your exercises, sets and reps from rules about recovery, volume and what you have trained recently. This is what most “AI workout app” means in practice, and it works well. It is closer to a very good expert system than to a chatbot.

- Adaptation. The plan changes in response to what actually happened: you missed reps, you skipped a day, the machine you needed was occupied. This is rarer and much more useful day to day.

- Language. A model that writes your plan in sentences or answers questions. Impressive in a demo, and largely beside the point when you are standing in a gym holding a phone.

The comparison below scores apps on the first two. We make one of them.

## The short answer

AGUNA is the best AI workout app for most people at the gym. Fitbod has the most refined programme generation and the largest exercise library. AGUNA is the one that adapts inside the session. One tap when a machine is taken and it reorders the workout, and it is the only app here that plans your food alongside your training. Caliber is the pick if what you actually want is a human coach with software attached. Nike Training Club uses no meaningful automation at all, and is free, which is a perfectly good trade.

## The apps in detail

Best in-session adaptation, and the only one that feeds you

### AGUNA

AGUNA builds each session from your goal, your training days, the equipment you have and what you lifted last time, then hands you a specific target for every set rather than a range. The distinctive part is what happens when reality interferes: tap Machine taken? and it immediately offers what you can do now and pushes the busy exercise later, so the session completes in a different order instead of losing an exercise.

It also plans the day’s food: breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack against your calorie and protein targets, with ingredients and macros, across fifteen regional kitchens. Steps sync from Apple Health, and daily movement earns credit against the subscription.

Honest limitations: a smaller exercise library than Fitbod, and a young app, launched in 2026. It runs on iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, and Android through Google Play.

The most mature generator

### Fitbod

Fitbod has been generating sessions from recovery and training history for years, and it shows: the exercise library is deep, the equipment filtering is precise, and it explains why it chose what it chose. If your definition of an AI workout app is “never plan a session again”, this is the benchmark.

It adapts between sessions rather than during one, and it does nothing about nutrition. Our full [Fitbod comparison](https://aguna.app/fitbod-alternative) goes into where each of us wins.

Best without a gym

### Freeletics

Freeletics adapts the next session to feedback on the last one, too hard, too easy or skipped, and it is unusually good with no equipment at all. Its nutrition side is a separate paid layer. If you are training in a small flat rather than a gym, it deserves a look before anything else here.

If you want a person, not a model

### Caliber

Caliber’s free tier gives you structured strength programmes, and its paid tiers put an actual qualified coach behind them who reviews your progress and adjusts. No algorithm currently sells you accountability, and accountability is what most people who stall are missing. It costs meaningfully more than app-only subscriptions, for the obvious reason.

If you want the maths, not the magic

### Alpha Progression

Alpha Progression does not market itself as AI and is arguably more genuinely intelligent than several apps that do: it tracks weekly volume per muscle group, builds splits, and makes progression suggestions grounded in training science. For an intermediate lifter who wants to understand the numbers, it is excellent. For a beginner who wants to be told what to do, it is too much.

No automation, no cost

### Nike Training Club

A large, well-produced library of guided classes and plans, free. Nothing here is generated for you. You pick a class. Include it in any honest comparison, because for a lot of people that is genuinely enough.

## How to judge an AI workout app in five minutes

Ask three questions of any app claiming intelligence. Does it give you a number? A plan that says “3 × 8 to 12” and never suggests a weight has moved the hard decision back onto you. Does it change when you do? Miss a session, fail a set, or find the rack occupied. If next week looks identical regardless, the adaptation is cosmetic. Does it explain itself? Apps that show why an exercise was chosen tend to have real logic behind them; apps that only say “AI-powered” often have a template.

And be sceptical of anything selling AI as the reason to buy. The value of automation in training is dull and specific: it removes decisions at the moment you are least equipped to make them. That is worth paying for. The word itself is not.

## Frequently asked

### What is the best AI workout app?

Fitbod has the most refined automatic session generation and the largest exercise library. AGUNA is the strongest at adapting during a session. One tap reorders the workout when equipment is busy, and is the only one of these that plans your meals as well. Caliber is the better answer if what you want is a real human coach.

### Do AI workout apps actually work?

The useful part works: choosing exercises, suggesting loads and adjusting volume are well-suited to rules and data, and they save beginners from the two things that stall them most, programme design and load selection. What no app can do is make you train, or replace coaching on technique.

### What does “AI” mean in a fitness app?

Usually programme generation, meaning the app picks your exercises, sets and reps from your history and recovery. Sometimes it means adaptation, where the plan changes based on what actually happened. Occasionally it just means a chatbot. Only the first two affect your training.

### Is there a free AI workout app?

Freeletics and Alpha Progression both have free tiers with real planning logic, and Caliber’s free tier includes structured programmes. Nike Training Club is fully free but generates nothing. It is a curated class library.

### Can an AI workout app replace a personal trainer?

For programming, largely yes, choosing exercises and progressing load is exactly the kind of task software handles well, and it costs a fraction of hourly coaching. For technique correction, injury history and accountability, no. An app cannot see your knees on a squat.

### Does AGUNA use AI?

AGUNA builds each session and each day’s meals from your profile, your equipment and your training history, and it reorders the session when a machine is taken. We describe what it does rather than the label, because the label tells you nothing about whether it will help.

We make AGUNA. The other apps are described by their published functionality, not ranked on quality.
